The Shambles is often described as the best-preserved mediaeval street in Europe with its overhanging timber-framed buildings, dates back to the 14th century. Originally a street of butcher shops, the name “Shambles” comes from the Anglo-Saxon word “shamel,” meaning stalls or benches.

It is widely believed that this narrow street inspired the Diagon Alley, the magical shopping street in JK Rowling’s Harry Potter, and it has a Harry Potter shop on the street as well, so don’t worry!
York City Walls
When you visit York, one of the first things you’ll notice are the impressive city walls. York City Walls have been standing for nearly 2,000 years, with their origins dating back to Roman times, stretches for about 2 miles and feature several notable gates, or “bars,” each with its own story.
Remember the ghost tours mentioned earlier, York City Walls have certainly witnessed countless historical events that can tell the tales of Yok’s history. Nonetheless, the path of the Walls is lined with trees and greenery, making it a pleasant walk when you are tired with all day bustling.
