Uncover York’s Rich History

York Minster

York Minster, one of York’s most beloved landmarks. The story of York Minster starts way back in the 7th century when it began as a simple wooden church. Construction of the current cathedral kicked off in 1220 and took more than 250 years to finish. Through the ages, York Minster has seen it all—from royal coronations to the upheavals of the Reformation.

One of the coolest things you can do at York Minster is climb the central tower. It’s a bit of a workout with its steep, narrow steps, but the views from the top are worth it. Once you reach the top, you’re treated to stunning panoramic views of York and the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, the sight is simply breathtaking. York minster today is still very much alive and kicking, make sure to come in and maybe you can catch the choir and organ performances.

The Shambles and the market

The Shambles is often described as the best-preserved mediaeval street in Europe with its overhanging timber-framed buildings, dates back to the 14th century. Originally a street of butcher shops, the name “Shambles” comes from the Anglo-Saxon word “shamel,” meaning stalls or benches.

Quaint shops, local cafes and shops still remain on this iconic street. It is probably the Shambles street that has made this town famous and magical (in my opinion). It is widely believed that this narrow street inspired the Diagon Alley, the magical shopping street in JK Rowling’s Harry Potter, and it has a Harry Potter shop on the street as well, so don’t worry!

York City Walls

When you visit York, one of the first things you’ll notice are the impressive city walls. York City Walls have been standing for nearly 2,000 years, with their origins dating back to Roman times, stretches for about 2 miles and feature several notable gates, or “bars,” each with its own story.

Remember the ghost tours mentioned earlier, York City Walls have certainly witnessed countless historical events that can tell the tales of Yok’s history. Nonetheless, the path of the Walls is lined with trees and greenery, making it a pleasant walk when you are tired with all day bustling.
